Alzheimer's / Dementia

For someone living with dementia, the focus has always been on what he or she can no longer do, as many of their abilities, along with their memories, are gradually lost to this disease. On Thursday, November 15, “Revolutionizing Dementia Care, ” a PBS documentary, will flip the script and show the benefits of focusing on what those with dementia can do – and how they can still contribute to society – instead.

“You can’t do all the things you did do, but you can still do a lot,” says one woman with early onset Alzheimer’s … right before she jumps out of an airplane.

Revolutionizing Dementia Care to Make It “Person-Centered”

According to this documentary, honoring a person’s remaining skills often requires finding a memory care community that practices more person-centered care. By living in a setting where their individual wants and needs are considered and they are allowed to be themselves, residents feel included, rather than excluded, and their well-being consequently improves.

“A revolution is here where people living with dementia get the individual heartfelt care they need.”

This documentary airs on Thursday, November 15, at 9 pm on WCVE PBS, WVPT PBS or WHTJ PBS. You can also watch the live stream the night of the broadcast. Learn more.
