Aging In Place

Jane and I (Rachel) have over 25 years of combined experience in allied health and we know the importance of fall prevention. We’ve spent our career helping others navigate the devastating effects of falls. The CDC reports an alarming increase in falls. And unfortunately many think the falls are an inevitable part of aging.

But the research shows us that we CAN be proactive and lower our risk of falling. An article in the American Journal of Preventive Medicine states the the two interventions with the greatest potential to reduce falls were:

  1. A vitamin D supplement
  2. Home modifications by an occupational therapist

Now, I cannot address the vitamin D supplement as it is not my area of expertise. However, I certainly would recommend bringing it up with your physician on your next physical. This intervention could be an easy solution to decrease your overall fall risk. But it may not be for everyone, your physician will have to look at your lab work and see if it is the right solution for you.

Home modification is something that I absolutely can address, it is exactly what we do. Our team of allied health professionals also specializes in home modifications. According to the article, the authors estimated over 100,000 potential falls could be prevented with home modifications.

Over 100,000 falls. Let that sink in for a moment.

Because, you see falls are NOT an inevitable part of aging. You absolutely can do something to lower your risk of falling.

Lower you fall risk with home modification

You CAN reduce your risk of falling by being proactive with your own health. According to this article, over 38 million Americans could benefit from home modifications.

Unfortunately, health insurance does not generally cover the in depth home safety and accessibility assessment that we provide. But isn’t home modification a worthwhile investment in your health? Even with health insurance, the consequences of falls often lead to out of pocket costs of co-pays and having to hire help. Not to mention the stress, pain and suffering they cause. So not only is home modification is good for your health and well being, but it could potentially benefit your pocket book as well.
