How Much Does In-Home Senior Care in Kentucky Cost?

The answer depends on location, type of care, and the provider. Recent surveys allow us to present an overview of in-home care and examples of costs in various Kentucky localities.

Non-Medical In-Home Care—Home Care Aides assist with hygiene, laundry, cooking and transportation. Their home visits typically take place several times a week and last from 2 to 8 hours.

Cost info: The average daily cost statewide is $113.


Medical Home Health Care—Trained aides offer skilled care such as checking pulse, temperature, and respiration, and they assist with medical equipment such as ventilators. They’ll visit the home as much as medically necessary, but stay for shorter periods than Home Care Aides.

Cost info: The average cost statewide is $118 per day. You can expect to pay 30% more or less, depending on the county and whether the aide is independent or with an agency.


Companion Care—Paid companions provide help with errands, housekeeping, medication reminders, as well as offering companionship. Visits can occur several times per week and typically last from 3 to 8 hours each.

Cost info: Usually, the more hours, the lower the hourly rate. The median hourly rate in Kentucky is $19.


Adult Day Care—Supervision and social activities are provided in a structured setting during daytime hours. Weekends are not included.

Cost info:  The average cost statewide is $1,453 per month. Urban areas generally can cost up to 30% more.


Medical Day Care—Some adult day care facilities offer medical day care, providing more intensive health and therapeutic services for individuals with severe medical problems and those at risk of requiring nursing home care. Families should expect to pay 5% to 15% more for adult day health/medical care than for regular adult day (social) care.

Cost info: The average cost statewide is around $90 per day for medical day care.


Hospice Care—Hospice care focuses on improving the quality of life for the terminal patient who can remain at home or receive care in a hospice facility. Hospice care provides emotional and spiritual support to the patient, pain management, and handles their medical needs.

Cost info: About 85 percent of end-of-life care costs are covered by various government entities, including Medicare, Medicaid, and private medical and long-term care insurance. For routine home care that patients need on a day-to-day basis, the average statewide cost is approximately $155 per day. Continuous home care for services during crises or for at least 8 hours to manage acute symptoms are around $900 per day.
